Default GlassDoor Brings Transparency To Salaries, From The CEO On Down

The transformative power of the social web strikes again, this time to break open the HR veil hiding salary totals from employees at the same or other companies. Well, since younger generations are moving up the corporate ladders, it seems as if they're bringing their complete lack of privacy along for the ride.

According to a recent Computerworld story, "Glassdoor Inc.'s database holds salary reports and company reviews from more than 165,000 people working at nearly 19,000 companies in over 100 countries."

Is your company on it? Or your competitor? You can find it all at GlassDoor.com. Better check.

Neat site! -But they ask for a lot of info, seems to be oriented toward gathering sales leads, etc. Kind of like some "health" sites, such as "real age" etc that are reputed to work for drug companies. But I will load my info in, seems like a fair swap!

Every publicly traded corporation should have to disclose salaries, it would be ok if they deleted names, below the executive level, but the wages, bonuses etc should be listed. -Stockholders need to be able to check that information.

Privately held corporations should have to disclose similar information. -If only as part of the annual state report, again, a corporation is by nature established to get the advantages of limited liability etc. With those very public protections should come some responsibilities.

Many public employees have had this information posted for years by their employers. Union wage scales are also available much of the time.

Wage privacy is a "straw man" arguement in most cases. And much of the time is used to cover up other deceptions.

If folks need privacy, sole proprietership is available.

Good site to gather info.

Only problem I see is that it does not truly keep your id and location that much of a secret. By asking for the city, state, and job title it pretty much tips off a company who is posting on the site and I suspect they would not be real happy to learn their employees are being so loose and free with this kind of data. I could see problems with my employer if they found you posting here....but that is typical of the culture around here.

On the flip side..there is some great data here and I would reccomend this to anyone who is going into salary negotiations with a prospective employer..what a way to get that extra edge when discussing salary.
