Re: 4/14 Poll: Employee Free Choice Act and Unions
The Employee Free Choice Act is so obviously one sided in its negotiations that it can do nothing but hurt the relationship between unions and management. This legislation opens up a huge amount of litigation that is bound to occur if operations find themselves with unions that they do not want as a result.
Anyone that has been around when a union comes in and attempts to get signatures has heard the stories of people being strong armed into signing things. The bad thing is that if a manager even states their opinion about what a union would do to operations, they open themselves up to litigation. The union can tell people whatever they want without any consequences.
If you leave the anonymous vote out of the equation, you also leave out the most important part of democracy, the campaign. In getting signatures, all the signies hear is the side of the union. They don't mention the fact that signing up for the union means losing a couple hundred bucks out of your paycheck every couple weeks. They also don't mention the fact that union employees, on average, take home less than non-union employees. Employers that mention these things set themselves up for union obstructionist litigation that can pretty much ruin a company.
The campaign leading up to the anonymous vote is the only opertunity to allow people to understand both sides of the story. This is an absolutely ridiculous legislation.
This would be like doing away with the November election in favor of voter registration cards. Everybody who signed up to be a democrat must be voting for the democrats anyway right?
I don't have a problem with unions. There are definitely plenty of companies that get what they deserve in the form of a union. The problem is that there a lot of employees out there that are going to end up getting something that they don't deserve in the form of union dues.
