Transportation service drivers certainly are a wealth of information.
I just returned yesterday from attending
Cordis LLC's Best Plants celebration in San German, Puerto Rico.
One of the many highlights of my trip was the driver who took me from the San Juan airport to the plant and back, which is about two hours each way. Here's a snippet of some work-related topics we discussed along the way:
- The driver talked about how he won a wrongful termination lawsuit after he was fired as an engineering manager for a major U.S. manufacturer (I'm not naming the company since I can't confirm his claim.) He says the company fired him in favor of a manager from the States without just cause. The court victory helped him buy an oceanfront home on the island's beautiful southwest coast.
- He mentioned that recent layoffs at a local plant were long overdue. "There were too many people just walking around that plant and not doing anything," he said.
- When I asked him what the job market was like on the island he shook his head and said there isn't one. He said most young college graduates move to the States for work. As for the college grads who stay: "You'll find them working on the assembly line for $11 per hour," he says.
The best part, though, was a stop along the way to a local food stand for a cold
Medalla beer and some roasted pig. Supposedly, it's the same stop Anthony Bourdain made when he visited there for a "No Reservations" episode. You can view what I believe is the portion of the episode that shows Bourdain eating at the same stand by watching
this YouTube video around the 5:42 mark.
