As I was watching ABC News before I left for work, a report came on about
an FBI raid in the 27 year old unsolved Tylenol poisonings case.
Now when I was growing up (the math problem is left as an exercise for the reader) the case was big news not only nationwide, but even more so in the Chicago area where I grew up.
A few of the comments in the story made me realize the changes in the world that you're often unaware of.
Of course the obvious one is all the consumer packaged goods changes that came in as a result of this very incident -- safety caps, foil seals, labelling, tracking codes, and so on.
But the one comment that stuck with me was that one of the theories that the FBI has been working on for years was that the poisonings weren't done by a local, but by someone who flew in just for a few hours to tamper with the bottles. However, they can't use that lead effectively because in 1982
you didn't need an ID to get a plane ticket or check in for a flight.
I'll remember that next time I fly.
