Question More Auto Companies Expanding In the U.S.?

According to an item in the Detroit Free Press, European carmaker Fiat is looking at sites to buld Alfa Romeos in the U.S.

I'm not sure whether to interpret this as a sign that there's strength in the U.S. auto industry still, or the more glaring weakness of European manufacturing.

Which interpretation seems closer to reality to you?

Could it be with a weaker dollar and high fuel prices it is attractive for European companies to put manufacturing close to the US market? I have heard at least one industry expert say that investment from Europe is very attractive right now.

We have noticed a huge increase in both Ford and General Motors investing in their manufacturing facilities throughout Europe and the US.

Are they strengthening their position before the invasion of the Europeans?

Our company has seen an increase in interest in Mexico amongst European auto suppliers. There interest in Mexico, is, of course, with an eye towards supplying OEMs based in the U.S. Southwest.
