I was at an event recently where numerous speakers gave presentations to a business crowd. Slowly, almost without me being consciously aware, I began counting the number of times the word "leverage" was used by this one particular speaker. I'm certain he wasn't aware, but the word "leverage" made it into his 40-minute speech 16 times. Amazing.
The word "leverage" has become completely overused, in my view. And in others' views as well, according to this BBC article titled "
50 office-speak phrases you love to hate." Given that this article is a product of the UK, I would have expected the buzzwords to be very different from ours. That's not the case. Certainly there are some that have a very British feel to them, but I guess phrases like "
let's touch base about that offline" have universal un-appeal.
