I?ve purposely held back my comments on the hullabaloo over the pending sale of P&O Ports to Dubai Ports World, a company controlled by the United Arab Emirates. While not commenting might be an occupational hazard for a blogger, I can?t see how yet another knee-jerk, ill-informed opinion can benefit the ongoing debate. Fact is, I, and I?m willing to bet many of you, haven?t thought too much about the risks and benefits of having non-U.S. operators at U.S. ports. Indeed, the two or three days that I?ve studied the issue (in between the other tasks I do each day) still leave me with more questions than answers.
That?s why I can?t see the problem with taking a deep breath and submitting the issue to an additional 45-day review, as required under the current rules, which?and I?m still sorting this out?may not have been followed during this approval process.
