It was interesting to read in IW that Russia is trying to allay foreign fears about negating contracts and in general hassling outside oil companies working with them to extract the country?s oil reserves. But it sounds all too familiar, the on-again, off-again love-you, hate-you rhetoric. Is this the country still embracing market reforms or the old hammer and sickle? When it comes to US/Russian relations, it?s like going to a friend?s house who treats you hospitably by offering you a bowl of soup only to find after a couple of spoonfuls that it?s cold.

Perhaps it s a knee jerk reaction, falling into the old one-upmanship that marked the Cold War Era. One thing is for sure: Russia has a stronger hand this time around. They?ve got oil and they know we want it.

Get ready for some more ?cold? diplomacy (and don?t forget to wear your earmuffs).
