When I attended a conference several years ago in Orlando, during a meeting with one of the manufacturing attendees I asked him what he thought was the single most important issue that deserves more coverage from IndustryWeek (http://www.industryweek.com/) and other trade publications.

His response: “safety.”

This executive explained how many manufacturers don’t realize how safety incidents impact their workers’ compensation costs, time away from work and lost productivity.

One of the ways IW is helping manufacturers gain the knowledge they need to reduce safety-related costs and improve overall staffing issues is through its Workforce Development track at the IW ’09 Best Plants Conference.

The Best Plants Conference (http://www.iwbestplants.com/)is taking place in Nashville, Tenn., April 27 through April 29. Workforce Development topics featured at the conference include seven sessions on topics covering such areas as lean leader development, safety and employee training and communication.

Some notable speakers include Doug Stone, who works in leadership development at Case New Holland North America and Ken Vandenberghe, corporate health and safety manager at IW 2008 Best Plants Finalist Rea Magnet Wire.
